Abortion and Social Security

Defunding Planned Parenthood

By Bob Laird

Someone sent me a facebook poll asking me if I thought it a good idea to defund Planned Parenthood. At the same time I was reading an article indicating that for the first time ever, the U.S. Social Security system received less money than it paid out to beneficiaries.

It made me think of a comment that my wife made to someone during a party while we were in the military. The individual was commenting about the large number of children in our family - we had four at the time - and asking how were we ever going to get them through college without going bankrupt. Of course, he was one Army officers who was married and drove around in a sports car with no rear seat. When anyone asked him why he and his wife didn't have any children, he would say, "no room in the car for them."

Well, Gerri told the gentleman that our children were going to pay for his social security. Roe v Wade occurred in 1973. The Guttmacher Institute, the research arm of Planned Parenthood, reported that there were 744,600 abortions in the United States in 1973. This increased to 1,034,200 two years later in 1975. Children born in 1975 would now be 36 years old. With the federal government collecting 6.2% of an employee's salary for social security, (assuming a $30,000 salary since age 22, and 50% of the children in 1975 were not aborted), that would be more than $12 billion in the social security account. That only accounts for the children saved in one year. What if we saved that many children for each of the years since Roe v Wade? Then, perhaps, we could be talking about another trillion dollars in the Social Security Trust Fund.

Legalized abortion in America is destroying our culture morally because it allows unpunished murder. It destroys our culture socially because it deprives children of siblings, cousins, and friends. It destroys our culture financially because it has sapped the young work force of its income-producing workers and thus has wrecked havoc on the Social Security System. Actions have consequences, and as a nation, we will be paying for the consequences of abortion for generations to come.
