Reaction to the Proposed Policy Change by the Boy Scouts

By Stu Nolan

Reports (see yesterday's post at VeritatisSplendor.com) that the Boy Scouts are considering allowing homosexually active participants have been attracting widespread attention. Today, we hear from the the National Catholic Committee on Scouting (NCCS) and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

Retired Colonel John Holloran, Jr., an Eagle Scout and chairman of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting, reports that "The BSA plans to get the National Executive Board to buy into this change at their meeting on February 6th. There is a chance that the National Executive Board will not approve it." He also recommends "mak[ing] your concerns known at the BSA Council level in hopes they will put pressure on the National Key 3 (Chief Scout Executive, National President and National Commissioner) and the National Executive Board."

Bishop Guglielmone, the NCSS Bishop Liaison, and the USCCB have released this statement: "It is premature to discuss the ramifications of the proposed change in the policy of the Boy Scouts of America concerning homosexuals in the organization. The decision has not yet been made by BSA. As Catholics, we expect that any changes in policy will continue to respect the values and traditions that the Catholic Church holds with regards to membership and leadership in scout units".

Respectfully, this is a disappointing statement. First, it suggests that it is somehow prudent to await the adoption of a bad policy before commenting on it at the sage when it is still merely a proposal and not yet ripened into a disaster. Second, it risks that the BSA will erroneously infer that as long as the troops faithful to Church teaching are not forced to admit the homosexually active, no harm is to be done by the proposed policy change in the Church's eyes.

In any event, leaving aside for the moment all the more obvious objections to the proposed policy change, has anyone at BSA put 2 and 2 together and figured out that if the Boy Scouts have "gay troops" and "traditional" troops, there is NO PRACTICAL WAY TO MANAGE that distinction when holding summer camps and other camping events. BSA property is used to host multiple troops from various regions of the country. Are they going to have "Gay Camp" and "Straight Camp"?

And if they did, does anyone really think the homosexual activists would be okay with that approach?

The Boy Scouts of America are recording telephone calls in support of the proposed change and calls in opposition. If you support retaining the current policy that prohibits participation by the homosexually active, you can reach BSA at 972-580-2000 and state that you OPPOSE the proposed change.
