A Real War On Women

By Noreen Daly

Cultural preference for male children is prevalent in many areas of the world such as the Middle East, Asia and Africa. Some of these governments even enforce mandatory abortion laws which has lead to an imbalance in the ratio between men and women. However, even in places where abortion is illegal, such as India (except in the case of danger to the mother's life, rape, babies with birth defects and cases where the mother is under 18), cultural problems mixed with new technologies have lead to the death of over 500,000 babies girls every year. For this reason, determining the sex of the child is illegal, however, as Catholic Online reports in its January 15th article "Lawmakers say the rules against sexing children before birth are not being enforced." The cultural pressures to produce male children is so great that mothers obtain illegal sex-selective abortions.

This is a real cultural war on women.
