Preaching the Gospel of Life with Clarity

Parish Priests Teaching through Homilies

By Bob Laird

The Catholic Church's teaching on respecting the dignity of the human person is much more than just being against abortion and euthanasia. Here are two homilies which I comment to your reading, review, and understanding. Both were presented by the two priests assigned to St. Raymond's Parish in Springfield, VA on Sunday, October 2, 2011 - Father John DeCelles and Father Mark Pilon.

Father DeCelles begins by asking, "What good does it do to preach on this subject?"
He answers his question by repeating the Christological fact that:

Christ is the cornerstone of our faith and of our life itself....
If we would not reject Christ the cornerstone,
let us not reject this cornerstone of respect for human life.

Father Pilon begins by stating that, "The dignity of the human person is a capital value for Christians and it should be a capital value for all mankind." He ends by quoting Pope John Paul II in the Gospel of Life when he challeged each of us.

"To be actively pro-life is to contribute to the renewal of society through the promotion of the common good. It is impossible to further the common good without acknowledging and defending the right to life, upon which all the other inalienable rights of individuals are founded and from which they develop."

These faithful priests are among many who consistently preach about the Gospel of Life throughout the year. Pray for our priests as they carry out this important role of the Church.
